| Black Opal is the variety which has a dark body colour. It can be translucent or opaque. Black Crystal Opal has a transparency which allows the dark body colour below the surface to be visible. Black Opals have a black opal potch base and a light crystal colour bar giving the opal a dark appearance. Even expensive black opals may have only a thin colour bar on grey or black potch. Because black opal is rare, there are doublets and triplets simulating black opal, it's like real wood and wood veneer. Doublet is a layer of precious opal glued to a black backing. (Look for the straight glue line) Triplet is a paper thin slice of precious opal glued to a black backing with a plastic dome or clear quartz cap glued to the top. (Look for the clear cap from the side) Sorry, we don't have doublets or triplets - only pure natural opals! |
